Early 18th Century Gessowork Looking-Glass

Original bevelled glass; original gesso and mainly original gilding.

This is a gorgeous early 18th century ‘gessowork’ (or just ‘gesso’) mirror. The basic outline is unremarkable for the period, swan neck pediment, cartouche, straight sides; but every detail within that standard outline is inventive, artistic. The cartouche is very complex with that shell in the middle and that curves both in and out. The swan neck pediment has extra leaves on both inner and outer sides. Extra little paterae in the top corners, every millimetere of the gesso surface has been richly decorated. The person who made this was an Artist who really knew what they were doing and didn’t skimp on the time it would take.
