The Shelburne

Adam vol.20/21

Adam worked simultaneously through the 1760s on both the town house and the country house for the 2nd Earl of Shelburne. In Wiltshire he rebuilt and extended the family seat of Bowood. In London Shelburne bought, and had Adam complete, the mansion at the south west corner of Berkeley Square. It is not known with certainty for which of the houses this delicate mirror was intended but the date would strongly suggest it was for London.

Airy and pretty, this is the oldest of his designs in this catalogue and its entwining growing branches retain a flavour of the earlier rococo style.
