The Anthemion

It is not known who commissioned this design, nor where it was intended. The style of the frame, with its large central piece of mirror glass, flanked by tall narrow mirrors would suggest a date in the late 1770s or early 1780s.

We have named our chosen designs from the annotations by Adam written in the margins of his drawings. But on some, such as this, there are none; so we have named it after the anthemions (honeysuckles) sitting on the top corners. The anthemion is very characteristic of Adam's work - a classical motif both elegant and simple, as is this frame which displays a nice balance of simplicity and ornament.
