A pair of giltwood torcheres in the manner of Robert Adam

Urns, sacrificial rams’ heads, serpents, the tripod form itself - all these are vocabulary seized on from the newly dug-up Classical world and used with boldness and glee to create something wholly derivative, and wholly of its time; like Roman (literally) candles exploding into the Heavens with an elegance and uplift never to be bettered.

They date from around 1770, though the gilding is later.
